August 2024 · 6 minute read

IN 2021, the Greedy singer, then just 18 years old, became the youngest musician to be featured on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list.

Tate McRae was introduced to American audiences during her 2016 appearance on the reality TV show, So You Think You Can Dance, but it was her 2017 viral hit One Day that catapulted her to fame.

Who is Tate McRae?

Tate McRae was born on July 1, 2003, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

When she was four, her family briefly moved to Oman before returning to Calgary in 2010.

McRae began dancing at the age of six, first competing with Drewitz Dance Productions, and then YYC Dance Project, a dance company owned by her mother.

She later started ballet training at the School of Alberta Ballet.

From 2013 to 2015, McRae voiced Spot Splatter Splash in the Lalaloopsy franchise, an animated TV series.

She was awarded Mini Best Female Dancer at the 2013 Dance Awards in New York City.

In 2015, she won the same award, this time in the Junior category.

In June 2016, McRae appeared on the TV series, So You Think You Can Dance, eventually placing third in the series' final episode.

McRae won Teen Best Female Dancer at the 2018 Dance Awards in Las Vegas, becoming the first dancer in the competition's history to win the award in all three age categories, mini, junior, and teen.

While McRae had primarily used her YouTube channel to post dance videos, in 2017, she began posting original songs that she wrote and recorded in her bedroom.

One of the songs, titled One Day, became a hit, amassing over 40 million views on YouTube before subsequently going viral on social media, including TikTok.

The smash single caught the attention of multiple record labels, and McRae eventually signed with RCA Records in 2019.

Since then, she's released two EPs, All The Things I Never Said on January 24, 2020, and Too Young To Be Sad on March 26, 2021.

McRae's lead single from her first EP, Tear Myself Apart, was co-written by Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell.

McRae has also collaborated with Ali Gatie, Lil Mosey, Khalid, Blackbear, and Troye Sivan.

Her debut studio album, I Used To Think I Could Fly, was released on May 27, 2022, debuting at number 13 on the US Billboard 200.

Her second studio album, Think Later, was released on December 8, 2023.

The album's lead single, Greedy, was the second-biggest US and global debut on Spotify when it was released in September, behind fellow Canadian rapper and singer, Drake.

Ahead of the album's release date, Tate McRae appeared and performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Saturday Night Live, the Billboard Music Awards, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Who has the singer dated?

Despite her young age, Tate McRae has had two serious relationships known to the public.

She was previously in a relationship with Jonny Hader from 2019 to 2022.

Jonny Hader was born on February 22, 1999 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

According to his LinkedIn, Hader is set to graduate from the Ivey Business School at Western University in 2024.

He was previously a Junior Hockey player in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, a Data Analyst at ATB Financial, and an Investment Banking Summer Analyst at Bank of America and J.P. Morgan.

He is currently a Managing Partner, Co-Founder, and Portfolio Manager at Richmond Capital Partners, a multi-strategy student investment fund.

Beyond his business acumen, Hader was also the camera operator and cinematographer for McRae's You Broke Me First music video in 2020.

The duo kept things relatively private, with very few posts on social media, before ultimately breaking things off in the summer of 2021.

McRae's 2022 song, Feel Like Sh*t, was reportedly about Hader.

Some of the song's lyrics include: "Last night for the very first time / You didn't even try to call / Oh, I won't lie, I thought I might die / I couldn't even sleep at all."

McRae notably had a slight overlap with Hader and her latest boyfriend, Cole Sillinger.

In 2021, Sillinger admitted that McRae was his celebrity crush, and the two reportedly went Instagram official in late 2021, just after her break-up with Hader.

In a 2022 interview with ET, McRae mentioned her boyfriend for the first time, stating: “He’s one of my brothers’ friends' friends so it all worked out."

She added: “It was really funny — I was like ‘I can forever hold this over you till the day you die, that I was your celebrity crush.'"

Cole Sillinger was born on May 16, 2003.

He is a professional ice hockey center for the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets.

The duo's romance was relatively short-lived, however, when they sparked breakup rumors in early 2023 after Sillinger deleted all photos of McRae off his Instagram.

McRae seemingly fired back with her music video for her hit single, Greedy, which was set in a hockey arena, likely a nod to her hockey player ex.
